Foundation | Make Up Tips, Tricks and Techniques

If the word foundation makes you think of caked-on make up, try a few different kinds before you rule out using it. Formulas nowadays seem to be a little lighter formulas whilst still delivering the appearance of flawless skin. That's the point of foundation - not to look like you have layers of make up on but to help your skin look it's best. There are three basic types of foundation: powder, liquid and mousse. Powder is good for your skin if it tends to be oily, and mousse works best on drier skin. Liquid foundation covers it all. If you still think foundation isn't for you, you can always use tinted moisturiser. It won't offer as much coverage, but it provides a nice base. Only go for heavyweight foundation if you really need it.

Application Tips:

- If your skin is dry and flake-prone, exfoliate in the morning, not only so that your moisturiser can get in but also that your foundation doesn't accentuate the flakes on your face.

- Never apply foundation to an unmoisturised face. The jury is still out on whether primer is truly necessary, but the skin should be prepped in some way.

- If your skin is oily, choose a oil free foundation.

- Be sure to warm foundation in the palm of your hand before you sweep it across your face and neck. You can use a foundation brush, but feel free to use your hands if they're clean.

- A trick for finding the right shade of foundation is to match it to your chest, particularly if you look after your skin. You don't want your face to look too pale. Always check it in sunlight too.. store lighting is wrong, wrong, wrong!

- Don't forget about blending where your jawline meets your neck! Make sure that's your face and neck match by blending the foundation down the top of your neck as well.

- Dust powder across your forehead, nose, and chin to set the foundation.
